Ireland can be proud of its contribution to popular music, not just the superpower of bands like U2, but with a huge range of tradition, pop and more eclectic artists, there is a new wave of excitement being created through talented artists who are being given opportunities to showcase their undoubtable talents.
One of the newest of this ilk is Alex Gough, a young drummer, producer and rapper from Waterford who is embarking on what may well be a truly exciting journey into the music industry. His latest release, ‘Fool’ provides us with an insight into his musical world.
The first thing you’ll do when you hear ‘Fool’ is either nod your head along to the catchy introduction or feel your foot tapping. This really simple and upbeat riff that sits behind the song drives a vocal that is offers advice and guidance to stop younger listeners from being a ‘Fool’. I’d like to know where the inspiration of the song comes from, possibly it could be a bit self reflective, or there is someone more specific in mind? One thing that will hit you is the individuality of the track. It is a rap song, but it doesn’t sit with any other artist in terms of style, it is refreshingly unique but clear enough to still appeal to the rap music loving faithful. There are nice blends of full and stripped back sections to the song that mean that the main hook doesn’t become repetitive, it stays as an addictive ear worm that has slight variations throughout that give further dynamics. Alex Gough has skill in lyric creation and particularly delivery, with overdubbing and separate tones giving a full vocal line to support the slick production of the track itself.
This is a really strong song that will attract attention in the media. It has a freshness to it that makes it relevant, it has simplicity to it that makes it appeal, but most importantly it has the vocal line and delivery that gets listeners, who might not necessarily like rap or heard of Alex Gough, interested in his music and there is an already impressive catalogue to engage with.
