The Canadian multi-instrumentalist has been around now for nearly 14 years, but a car accident has meant that there has been an understandable hiatusher production for a couple of years.

Thankfully she has now begun writing and performing again and her new releases show she is definitely back and means business, with beautiful melodies and harmonies that transfer the listener on a journey of discovery. Kiesa Ellestad is incredibly talented, with skills in the instruments she plays and a clear vision for how she wants her songs to develop.

They say girls are from venus and boys are from mars, with ‘When Boys Cry’ you feel that Kiesza wants you to think that too! The words are interesting, without being too complicated they tell a story that you want to listen to, you follow them and try and unpick what Kiesza is saying. I don’t know for sure, but this does feel like this is very much based on personal experience, but cleverly, the song seems to be two things. On the one hand it is a warning to girls to be aware of what to look for to tell the real emotion on a male friend or partner face and expression, however, you also feel that this is seen as a supportive song to share with girls that actually boys ‘tell the world that they’re fine’ but behind the tears lie the truth to how emotionally stable a boy could be. Whichever version you chose to follow, I think the music cleverly flows through verse, bridge and chorus to allow for the repetitive message to sink into your subconscious and have you humming the hook over and over again. Wait for the 35 second mark and hear the beautiful vocal harmony bridging verse and chorus, it’s what made me love this song. Once that had happened I listened and heard lots of very subtle parts of the track that are seamlessly added and keep this recording fresh. The vocal itself is so clear you can hear every ‘t’ sung..

This release is different, it is a pop song that crosses over to lots of other genres and displays the talents of a very accomplished singer, songwriter and instrumentalist that uses her talents superbly well to craft a beautifully orchestrated song that hopefully won’t make too many boys cry!
