Meghan Trainor is a name you’re more than likely familiar with. All About That Bass was her first major release with manager Troy Carter, and it became one of the fastest selling singles of all time reaching number one in 58 countries - an impressive feat to say the least.
First and foremost, Trainor is an incredible songwriter who can produce some wonderfully diverse material. This is probably due to the fact that she was brought up on some classic artists, aligning her tastes to Stevie Wonder and Frank Sinatra. At 26 she has already packed a huge amount into her career, and because of her wonderful ability to write songs, she will be filling the airwaves with new music for a long time to come.
At the very start of her latest release ‘Blink’, Meghan shows she’s more than a performer. Combining some bebop with lots of over production to give a unique effect which accompanies her lead vocal. Once you hear her voice you suddenly realise how distinctive it is and you can hear bits of her biggest hits with the main phrase; ‘You better not blink’. Her skill at writing and mixing genres is very impressive, this song is very different to any of her previous work. There are bits that if stripped back could be reminiscent of Andrew Sisters, there’s also a dubstep beat, plus complex instrumentation behind all the vocal that is fresh and keeps you as the listener struggling to stop moving, but you have to. One must listen to the words to decipher what ‘Blink’ is really about. The lyrics are about self confidence and determination she is gaining. Meghan is now one of the biggest artists in the world and this song seems like a warning shot to critics who have reviewed her personal appearance in the past.
Most of Meghan Trainor’s songs have got people talking. Her talent as a songwriter, the power of the vocals and the creativity makes her stand out. To be regarded as something special you have to give something different, but still appeal. With more songs like this, she will be starting to get regarded as approaching a genius. The complexity and inclusion of musical styles that haven’t been combined before make ‘Blink’ a very special song.
