Review: Fleur East 'Lucky'

It’s been a while now since we first saw Fleur East, way back on the 2005 X Factor show, when she was part of Addtictiv Ladies. Work followed as a solo artist, but she is probably more familiar as an individual performer on the 11th series of the same show, where she was far more successful.
More individual high profile work followed, as did an appearance on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, where she came 4th in the 2018 series. Her style is influenced by drum and bass, which is clear on listening, but you can certainly tell that there are other influences that stand out in the work that she does.
Her latest offering ‘Lucky’ is, as you would expect, a reference to someone's luck in life’s long journey. The repetitive lyrics in the chorus certainly drives that home, but I think the message of the song is that, yes luck is important for lots of things, but actually those people who get lucky are very often the hardest workers. You sense that with lines like: ‘luck can only take you so far.’
With smooth guitars and a slick vocal performance, Lucky does transcend genres. Definitely a drum and bass influence, but there are elements of calypso that creep in and make this a fun song to listen to. The tempo is upbeat, with straightforward backing that works well because Fleur East can power a vocal and give energy to her music.
We can see that Fleur East has of course been lucky, she’s had two cracks at the X Factor, she’s been introduced to some of the top producers and writers in the world for instance, but she’s also super talented and works hard to make music that is going to appeal to a huge demographic.
