Review: JP Cooper 'Bits and Pieces'

You may have heard JP Cooper on the Jonas Blue song, ‘Perfect Strangers’. He has also appeared on ‘Get Involved’ from Craig David’s 2018 album release ‘The Time is now’.
At 36, JP Cooper has lots of experience in composition, performance and most recently collaboration, but with his blend of soul, tropical and soft rock, he delivers a blend of music that sets his sound out and makes his work fresh, but still maintaining a retro feel.
With a soft electric piano and unique vocals, ‘Bits and Pieces’ starts with real soul and an emotion that will carry you through. As the verse continues, the dynamic builds, with a big vocal sound for the chorus, which gives the impression of a full gospel choir. The production is clever in that it doesn’t overdo all the instrumentation supporting the melody, but gives a lot of reverb to distinguish the accompaniment from the vocal line. The chorus comes in with real volume each time and the straightforward, powerful main hook, along with the backing vocals make this a really good song that combines verse and chorus well to produce a really soulful, yet pop flavoured track that shows off not only JP Cooper’s singing voice, but also his composition and power in lyric creation.
Before I heard this song, bits and pieces as a title took me to The Dave Clark Five's pop enthused fun number, which is very much a stark contrast to JP Cooper’s soulful ballard. This song provides real emotion and passion and you can hear that his experience as a songwriter and artist is developing in leaps and bounds, with the skill to combine classic, effortless male lead vocals with an edge of soul that fits well into the pop world that dominates the charts.
