All-female, Pop-R&B group, Little Mix rose to fame after winning X-Factor way back no in 2011, and are well known for their impressive vocal harmonies and exuberant stage presence.
Their debut single ‘Cannonball’ very quickly rose to number one in the UK charts and amassed a large following of mainly young girls. DNA, their album featuring the single ‘Wings’, which was also a UK number one, became the UK’s highest-charting debut album ever by a British female group. Jade Thirwall, Jesy Nelson, Perrie Edwards and Leigh-Anne Pinnock are the four women who complete the worldwide sensation, Little Mix and their latest track, ‘Break Up Song’ is not going to disappoint fans.
If Little Mix would want to be like another influential girl band, you’d probably bet that The Spice Girls might be the one to model yourself on. The reason I say this is because there are some very close similarities with ‘Break Up Song’ and some of the familiar melody lines and harmonies that we would have heard from the first girl power phenomenon. Don’t be fooled by the first few seconds of this track though, the sound and mood you’re expecting comes in very quickly, and from then on, you know that this Little Mix song is going to give you mood, emotion, melodies and a great balance of the combined vocals. The verse is stripped back and quieter, then the leading hook of the chorus is built with lots of harmonies, synths that push the texture and freestyling vocals that reinforce the raw talent of each member of the group. The dropouts work really well to break the song up, and while this song, as you would expect, is about breaking up of relationships, the tonality and feel is high energy and quite uplifting, which helps us fit in with the groove.
‘Break Up Song’ seems to tick every box that you would hope from a well-established girl group like Little Mix. What hits you with this track is their voices. Each one of them has real power behind their style, and the four of them together are something quite special, and their newest release is an excellent showcase in which to hear that.
