While most artists are waiting for the ideal time to drop their albums amidst the coronavirus pandemic, Lawson is here to charm you with their latest single ‘Animals’.

The British band from Dorset has been at it since 2009 and their pop-rock-alternative sound remains as appealing as ever over a decade later. Despite the crisp vocals and the electronic synth guitars and drum sets, there exist a joyous, seventies-themed, dance-infused spirit in their sound. With an upbeat tempo and vocals that soar through the high notes with ease, the band’s latest tune will get you on your feet and moving. The clicks and snaps sounding in the background build anticipation for the pulsating chorus, where the bass takes over and the electric guitar thumps in with so much gusto.

Lead singer Andy Brown keeps the proceedings fresh and sparkling with his striking voice, though he does benefit from a simple but clever production arrangement. Stylistically, it might fade in with all the contemporary synth-based pop tracks that are coming out nowadays but the strong Phil Collins-reminiscent old-school vibes do make the track stand out a little bit. The instrumentation is also bursting with unabashed enthusiasm. The touches of saxophone that slithers in at the bridge, solidifying the track as an exhilarating dance tune for this day and age.

Note that the band was on a four-year hiatus so 2020 is looking like it’s going to be a massive year for them. ‘Lovers’ was their first single following the hiatus, and ‘Animals’ is a stunning follow-up that will endear them to their fans even more. In an interview, Andy Brown revealed that all the members were just focused on their own projects during the hiatus but Lawson the band has always been their No. 1 priority. Speaking on future touring plans, the lead singer said, “We’d love to come back. Singapore was one of our favourite places to gig. We had such a fab time there. When this is all over it’s definitely something we’ll be putting in place.” When speaking about what ‘Lovers’ was all about, he said, “It’s inspired by new love. Imagine meeting someone for the first time and just wanting to run away together. Get lost in every moment.”
