UK country singer Vic Allen has brought some wonderful news to fans of her live shows. The track “I Can” has become hugely popular among her loyal devotees and the song will now receive an official release as a single on June 12.

Written immediately following the end of a long-distance relationship, the lyrics manage to be both sombre and joyous all at the same time. Allen does not lament the end of the relationship, rather, her sadness is borne from wanting to apologise for not feeling she cannot live without her ex.

“I wrote this song literally minutes after my last relationship ended. We were long distance, and so broke up via a very emotional phone call. When we hung up, this song just poured out of me. It’s everything I wanted to say and is definitely my favourite thing I’ve ever written”.

Most people will be able to easily relate to the message of this song. Knowing that we should be devastated by something but finding ourselves unable to be because we know that brighter times are ahead. We know we have made the right decision, even though it hurts. Allen doesn’t rejoice in the pain, but she tells us it’s going to be OK. That more happiness is just around the corner. This theme underpins the song with a comforting sense of hope.

Allen’s last release dropped in October 2019; her third EP titled “Enough.” Containing four songs, it was a wonderful blend of different themes, each track giving us a new story, told through her soulful lyrics and beautiful voice. A songwriter since her teens, she was inspired to learn guitar by John Mayer, writing her first official song after travelling to the US and gaining further muse from the likes of Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift.

The country artist loves to travel, first moving to London from Norwich where she met Sue McMillan who produced “I Can.” She recently journeyed to Nashville, US, appearing on Radio Disney Country and performing at the Song Suffragettes 6th Anniversary Show. Allen will be touring the UK with the Suffragettes later this year; it was originally planned to kick off in April, however, was cancelled due to COVID-19.

The music in “I Can” is simple and soulful, with guitars taking the lead and providing that familiar, warm, country feel. Allen’s relaxing, easy voice is superb and pairs beautifully with the overall tone and message of the song. The upbeat tempo will have you tapping your feet and nodding your head along, and I defy anyone not to smile when they hear this song. It’s catchy, relatable, and genuinely enjoyable to listen to.

You can pre-order "I Can" here.
