Review: Another Sky's Latest "Fell In Love With The City"

Another Sky’s newest single, Fell In Love With The City, is a musical journey.
The first thing that feels so incredibly gripping about the track is the singer’s hauntingly beautiful voice. Catrin Vincent’s androgynous tone, and complex melodies are both shining in hope, yet tainted with melancholy, which contrasts the tone of the song so perfectly. The music itself feels soaring and groovy, in typical alternative fashion, but the tight, progressive rhythms make this song stand out above the pack.
The production is incredibly comfortable, especially when you can hear the drummer’s sticks hit the rims of his toms in the first verse. This gives off the impression that you’re actually there, watching the group create their magic. The song builds upon its verse-chorus structure, until the bridge enters half way through the song. At this point, the band fully embodies the progressive rock hints it showed previously, sounding almost like a Haken track. And then comes the secondary bridge, the climax of the song. At this point, the way the song was structurally headed, this was very expected, but that did nothing to diminish its impact in the composition.
The power and inspiration Another Sky exuded in this section would give even the most stubborn listeners goosebumps. The guitar’s simple melody, which is persistent throughout the entire track, shines the most in this section, taking the spotlight backed with the entire band’s vibrant, warm energy to support it. In terms of instruments, the bass makes the subtlest, yet arguably the strongest statements in Fell In Love With The City. In instrumentally-heavy sections, such as the intro and the choruses, the bass mostly sits in the back accenting chord tones, which is usually expected from a bass section, but when the atmosphere settles, the bass takes a much more rhythmic and harmonic importance. It compliments not only the vocal melodies, but also supporting the beautiful chordal extensions expressed by the piano.
Fell In Love With The City will absolutely bring Another Sky to your radar if they weren’t already, with this song being one of the greatest efforts 2020 has seen so far. It is both ambitious and easy to digest, and the uniqueness of the band’s sound, especially with the singer, is enough to peak any listener’s curiosity and interest, for far longer than the duration of this song.
