If you’ve not heard of singer-songwriter-producer-actor-global superstar Finneas, I can guarantee you will at least of heard of his sibling: Bille Eilish.

Finneas remains most well known for his work with Eilish – he co-wrote and produced her smash hit debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? from his small bedroom studio in his parents’ LA home – but he’s stepping out from behind the mixing desk again with the (re-)release of his debut EP / mini-album Blood Harmony.

Defining Blood Harmony is the first tricky step here. It was originally released in October last year as a seven-track EP, but is now being rolled out again as a deluxe edition with two additional songs: his 2018 single Break My Heart Again and a new version of Let’s Fall In Love For The Night.

It’s also important to note early on the huge difference in sound between Eilish’s edgy, ice-cool electro and Finneas’ own sound, which more closely resembles soul-tinged laid-back pop. But Finneas is a man of considerable talents (he wrote and produced every track here himself), and with this collection he proves he can turn his hand to just about anything.

Opening track I Lost A Friend is a superb piece of songwriting, a mournful ballad lamenting lost friendship that highlights the strength of Finneas’ voice. Shelter lands a little closer to his sister’s brand, a stripped-back verse interlaced with a rousing chorus set to some smooth drum rhythms, while I Don’t Miss You At All is built around some soft synth melodies.

Lost My Mind has something of a crooner feel to it, a motif he explores again with the new version of Let’s Fall In Love For The Night, though the original is still the better version of that track. The only other new addition for the deluxe edition is, as mentioned, his single Break My Heart Again, which has been available for years.

As you’d expect, the production throughout is unbelievably slick. Whether or not there’s enough extra on show here to justify the deluxe re-release is up for debate, but either version of Bloody Harmony confirms Finneas is just as comfortable behind the mic as he is in front of it.
