Review: San Cisco Reach for New Horizons with Their Fourth Album Between You and Me

Between You And Me marks eleven years of San Cisco, and the Australian indie-pop group have come a heck of a long way in that time. With three albums, all top 20 hits in their homeland, and a string of EPs and awards and nominations under their belts, they’ve become one of the biggest bands in their field down under, and gained an increasingly strong reputation beyond Aussie shores too.
Now comprised of long-time friends Jordi Davieson (guitar and lead vocals), Josh Biondillo (guitar and vocals) and Scarlett Stevens (drums and vocals) after the departure in 2018 of founding member and bassist Nick Gardner, their fourth LP has the feel of a band who have put all that experience to good use.
Skin is an assured opener, a laid-back groove with some sultry lyrics (“your skin on my skin is what’s been missing / in my sweet dreams you’re the one that I’m kissing / now you’re gone”), while On The Line mixes a funky guitar riff with some gorgeous keys to stunning effect.
Messages is a sweet pop song with a strong bassline that cleverly stays the right side of the saccharine, Shine ramps up the disco feel with 80’s inspired synths, and When I Dream is a ludicrously catchy song that has a little feel of the Beach Boys to it. Alone is a heartfelt slow-burner built around a fantastic but simple riff, and Flaws and Tell Me When You Leave Tonight provide some pensive moments of reflection amongst all the feel-good sunshine vibes as the album winds down.
Four of Between You And Me’s tracks (Flaws, Reasons, Skin, and Gone) appeared on the band’s EP Flaws, which was released in March this year. But there’s plenty more in this album to warrant a deeper exploration of San Cisco’s polished and increasingly mature surf-infused indie-pop sound.
