Canadian singer and songwriter Alex Frew made a lot of people sit up and take note with his debut single Get Out Alive, which was released earlier this year. That track was a smart, slickly produced pop number that framed his rich vocals with a slow beat and warm sound.

Now the 18-year-old is back with the followup, Antisocial Love Song. Featuring fellow Canadian pop sensation A Is For Arrows, it is an angst-filled love song set to a sparse, almost ghostly backing track. It’s a far more low key affair than his first offering but has a wonderfully hypnotic feel. A Is For Arrows’ contribution is absolutely fantastic too, her vocals perfectly playing off of Frew’s own.

It’s a song that also shows Frew’s wonderful eye for a lyric, as he sings: “Lock myself inside my head / Never needed any other friends / Cause I would rather stay in bed / Living in another world instead / But when we met you turned a switch on / Never knew I could feel something so strong / This is an antisocial love song / So f**k the world this is where we belong”.

In a press statement released alongside the new single, Frew said: “This song is very important to me. It took on a new meaning after this global pandemic occurred. It wears its pop music qualities on its sleeve, but it touches on the difficulty of being alone and finding connections with others – a feeling which has only been amplified by the world’s current situation. I can’t wait to release it.”

To emphasise the influence of the current Coronavirus pandemic on the track, Frew sings “When I isolate you’re coming too / Because I want to be alone, alone with you”. If you’re looking for this kind of soulful introspection, Frew is quickly marking himself as a real talent to watch and anticipation will be building for his debut album.
