London-based singer-songwriter Izzy Bizu dropped her latest single this week. MG follows hot on the heels of her previous single Tough Pill, which landed back in July. It’s another soulful, rich number of the sort she has carved out a burgeoning reputation for, and this time it features Bizu’s friend Dom McAllister too. The two first met when he supported Bizu on her tour of Europe in 2017. It was also co-written with another of Bizu’s friends: Tancrede Rouff.
MG is a soulful, high energy affair, with a smooth beat and Bizu’s glorious vocals. It’s a belter and only serves to build the hype even further for her new album, which is due out in 2021.
Lyrically, the song was inspired by a promise that Bizu’s father made to her about one day buying an MG car and setting off an adventure together. Sadly Bizu’s father passed away before that dream could be realised, but rather beautifully, the video sees Bizu pay tribute to that promise.
Writing on her official Facebook page about the video, Bizu said: “So excited to share this video with you. It’s exactly the visual I had in my mind when I wrote the song with two friends in my home studio on a rainy day in London. It’s like driving away with someone special at sunset, trying to find new beginnings and realising that you don’t need that much to be happy.
“Sometimes we have all these material things and goals and forget that actually for most of us, we could do anything we want from anywhere in the world. Originally the song was about a promise that my Dad made to me that one day we would buy an MG. We used to walk past the MG store and he would ask me to pick out my favourite and said we would buy it one day and drive away on an adventure. He wasn’t around long enough to be able to do that, so it was emotional to do the video but also an amazing experience.”
