Katie Melua’s latest single ‘Joy’ is a tender ode to the people that make each and every day worth living. The British singer-songwriter has spent over seventeen years building a decorated, beloved career, and her latest feature contains as much heart and complexity as her first pieces.

The Georgian-origin artist released her eighth studio album, aptly titled Album No. 8, on October 16, and it’s just a remarkable demonstration of vulnerability, self-discovery, and artistic versatility. ‘Joy’ is a ballad that touches upon Georgia’s musical culture; it also contains hints of country-folk, a genre that’s known for its gentle melodies and its tender exploration of relationships.

A steady acoustic guitar chord is enough to drive the verse along, while Melua’s own soft vocals do more than enough to set up a contemplative atmosphere. At its core, the song can be interpreted as a love song, but something about the delicate instrumentation and the measured tempo of the tune implies that the song could be a celebration of all sources of joy in our lives, not just a romantic partner or a friend. There’s a collective appreciation for all the forces that surround us with strength and support. The lyrics are just as soothing and magical as the composition — Melua uses powerful, visual descriptors to convey the diversity of her emotion. From “moonlight on the river” to the “air is getting colder,” each and every line has been framed to build a picture, to invoke a certain set of feelings within the listener. The strings that take off during the first chorus add a bit more momentum to the song but more or less, they help sustain the calming effect created by the melody.

Katie Melua’s voice is also blessed with a deep warmth that might invite comparisons to American singer Norah Jones. With similar musical and performing styles, it would be an apt comparison, though the two have two vastly different discographies.

Even the music video for ‘Joy’ has some personal connection to the singer — the story was written by Georgian screenwriter Keti Devdariani, and Katie’s own grandmother makes an appearance. Those little aspects only solidify the special meaning behind the song and what it takes to live every day with endless gratitude and appreciation.
