When it comes to old-timey, nostalgic songs, there are very few that can match CMAT’s level of quality. Her soulful voice, all coupled with beautifully intricate production, make songs like her newest single, I Don’t Really Care for You, all the more special.

There’s something quite stylish about the Irish singer’s style that is incredibly hard to mistake. The moment a CMAT song begins playing, you don’t need her vocals to know exactly who’s going to hop on the mic. With I Don’t Really Care for You, she seems to have brought the vibe back further in time than she ever has before, borrowing sounds from Motown and even older soul and R&B music. The instrumentation is filtered in this gritty overdrive-like sound that sells the sound even better. Her harmonization is perfect as always, truly using her voice as part of the instrumentation. The counter-melodies in the pre-choruses are probably what exudes the most retro tones out of every aspect of the song, and to me they feel the most special. I can’t help but grin every time they make their appearance. The mellotron is another huge contribution to my love for this song – its distinct, classic sound is ever so subtle in this composition, but its presence is very important, in my opinion. Another thing to mention is CMAT’s voice itself – not only is it back and ever-so fitting, but I truly feel like this is her best performance so far, especially in the bridge towards the end of her song. Her tone is very moody, confident, and unique, but the bridge shows a side of the singer her listeners might’ve not heard so much before, and it’s an incredibly welcomed addition to the track.

CMAT has yet to disappoint, and this new single has to be my favorite of hers. She is consistently getting more and more confident in her voice and in her sound, and her compositions are getting better in consequence of that. It’s an incredibly catchy tune, and overall a super fun song that’ll surely be repeated for the next while.
