Review: Suburban Symphony’s New Song 'School Gate'

In an electric and exciting new single, Suburban Symphony delivers some of the most exciting melodies of the year with School Gate.
You can’t talk about the song without also touching on the wonderful music video for the track. At first, one might find themselves confused, seeing as it’s played by younger people, far younger than the skill performed in School Gate shows. The opening message does mention that these students learned how to play the song, but they do a fantastic job really catching the nuances played by the band, looking incredibly convincing. At the last quarter of the song, the video switches from the kids to the actual band playing it, and it’s clear that both are really legit. Not only that, but it’s very heart-warming to see the band’s song being loved by these people so much that they’d learn the song front to back, and I honestly can’t blame these kids. It’s a wonderful song, full of passion and groove. The harmonies during the choruses are minimalistic in the best way possible, highlighting the strength in the melody during those passages. The progression of the song, from start to finish, feels so full and strong. Never at any point does it feel like that band was dragging the parts or cutting through the song to fit a radio-friendly length. Every chorus feels as fresh as the last, and the verses especially vary from one another so much that they very much deserve individual praise. While the first verse introduces the song brilliantly, the second verse’s rhythmic breaks feel like a clarinet player timing their breaths to perfection, and it’s indescribably tight. Besides the dance-y chorus, that was really the highlight for me, but the song is a delight from beginning to end.
There’s a love for music here that isn’t found in most songs, and that’s even without the music video. But considering that the video exists, the band does a wonderful job adding visual context to just how much they care for their craft with the beautiful nature of the music video. It’s truly a gift that we must all cherish, gems such as these are very rare.
