Review: A Concert Six Months From Now - Finneas

A bit of pop, a bit of folk, a bit of rock, and a whole lotta Finneas, the young artist’s newest single, “A Concert Six Months From Now” is a beautiful journey that takes you through just about every emotion one might face in the midst of a pandemic-induced confinement.

It’s no surprise that the force behind Billie Eilish’s sound releases pure gold, I truly didn’t expect anything less coming from Finneas. The song starts very folky, with a bright acoustic guitar strumming comfortable, camp-fire chords, sung over with a close, vulnerable voice paired with a subtle falsetto harmony. The harmony is one of the most important part of this song – it’s truly one of Finneas’ forte. There’s a fake build up at the end of the chorus that feels like it would lead to an exploding bridge, but it falls right back to the verse. This time, however, quiet strings can be heard breathing even more life into the composition, and suddenly an explosion occurs. The climax we were promised just moments before in the form of a rock anthem. Drums blasting, distorted guitars bring the energy to record-breaking highs, only to fall right back to the folky feeling showcased all the way up to this point. Another gorgeous verse with even more strings, still quiet as ever, leading the song to a bittersweet end, feeling quite abrupt. It’s a fitting end to such a tune, and wraps up the story told by the singer wonderfully.

It’s one thing to blend genres in an intricate and clever way, but it’s a whole other thing to blatantly switch genres drastically and make it work. Finneas showcases his musicianship brighter than before in “A Concert Six Months From Now”, and especially his skills as a composer.
