Review: Hopeless Romantic – Sam Fischer

Sometimes simplicity is all it takes to spread your message, and Sam Fischer showcases that wonderfully with his newest single, Hopeless Romantic.
On the surface, Hopeless Romantic is quite simple, but huge in tone. While the verses have this storytelling vibe with thinner instrumentation, the choruses expand as wide as the desert. You can almost physically feel the breath, the space, and the air that is exuded from the soaring chords, the illustrative harmonies and the infectious melodies. Right off the bat, however, there is some underlying complexities that might go unnoticed upon a first listen. There is something interesting going on with the rhythm especially. Over the simple guitar progression, that cleverly pulls a quick change on the last chord, there’s a hint of afrobeat, which is overwritten by the more standard trap drums, but the feel is always there nonetheless. Where the composition both grows the most complicated, however, is within the last chorus, the true climax of the whole song. Harmonies were played throughout all choruses, even in some parts of the verses, but they are really put into play in the last few measures of the song. The chorus almost gives it this gospel, world-y feel that benefits the emotions and the tone of the song so beautifully. The last section is very reminiscent of Peter Gabriel, had he made his album “So” in 2021. That’s where Sam showcases his talents the most – his ear for harmony is absolutely out of this world. He truly managed to make an otherwise simple composition irresistible.
Like stated before, simplicity can be key in a lot of compositions. The complexities brought forward by the artist are welcomed additions, but the composition, on paper, is incredible. Everything else just adds even more to the genius that is Hopeless Romantic. It’s a worthy addition to Sam’s catalog, and one of the greater chill-pop songs that have released this year without a doubt.
