Review: Natural Light Ludovico Einaudi

Ludovico’s brilliant imagery through the tips of his fingers shine brighter than ever in his newest single, ‘Natural Light’.

Imagery is an extremely important part of classical music. Where most songs have lyrics to tell a story, or convey a message, classical musicians, for the most part, rely solely on both the listener’s imaginations and their own understanding of melodic movements, harmony, and rhythm. Ludovico relies only on a piano this time around, which is much barer than some of his earlier works including quartets. The muffled sound of the keys adds a sense of intimacy that brings you all the more close to the story he wishes to tell, like you’re sitting right alongside him on the piano bench. There’s a sort of breath that passes through the composition, whether added artificially in post-production or captured organically, that support this sensation so much more. Carefully listening to this piece will bring you along a journey of life and light, beautifully captured in the title of the song. Ludovico’s greatest strength, however, resides in his rhythm. While his playing wouldn’t necessarily be considered complicated technically speaking, his usage of space and free-form tempo is absolutely captivating, sometimes leaving the listeners holding their breath, despite not having crazy, epic climaxes. The dynamics of the track remain consistent for the most part, but it’s part of the melodies and the chords, and the way in which they’re perfectly conveyed that leaves this sense that silence is a necessity to fully enjoy this track. Even the sound of my keyboard typing as the song plays is distracting.

It’s not everyone that can truly enjoys classical music, and that’s not a bad thing either. It’s a genre that’s inherently a bit less accessible, but Ludovico finds inspiring ways to make it as complex to understand as it is easy to listen. It’s a true masterpiece that’ll calm the most anxious souls.
