Review: Rush – Raveena

Raveena blesses our ears once again with her newest single, ‘Rush’, truly embracing Indian percussion in a soothing R&B anthem.
Culture has always been a huge part of Raveena’s music, and she’s done a wonderful job embracing so many different facets of music all the while staying within the frame of new-school jazz and R&B. This time, however, the jazz elements are far subtler, and instead this sounds more true to a pop song than anything Raveena’s ever done. Still, she finds ways to make the sounds of her tune her own, notedly by appreciating her Punjabi roots, especially in the percussion of the song, taking inspiration from traditional Punjabi songs. That beat truly feels like the drive of the song, and feels like a breath of fresh air for her music. The melodies are luscious, especially in the chorus, which have always been Raveena’s strength. The structure of the song is pretty standard, following a verse-chorus pattern, which really help give focus on the very unique elements of the song. Raveena has always been good with having a good balance of complexity and simplicity to put the spotlight where it needs to be. Such is the case in this song, where every instrument, every melody, every harmony, feels purposeful. The way she traverses each section, each chord, with such a determination and purpose is absolutely key to the greatness of this song. All those elements combined makes for one of Raveena’s most unique, different, and beautiful songs.
‘Rush’ is a true work of art; a different direction for the artist, one that pays off both in its ambition and execution. Her newest single proves that Raveena always seeks to expand her musical voice, and flex her ever-growing talent once again in one of the most profound songs of her career.
