The heavily-teased single (seriously, it was previewed over a year ago…) ‘Light Switch’ by Charlie Puth has finally been released. So, the question that everyone who both waited in anticipation for all that time and those who stumbled upon the song; does the song meet its expectations?

Saying that Charlie Puth is a talented musician is an understatement. You’ll see both musicians and casual music-enthusiasts bring out Charlie’s pitch perfect abilities every time his name is mentioned. He’s made himself a legend in the pop industry, and yet taken the last while to brew his next project after scrapping his last album, and releasing a few singles here and there. His talents, and the time that was spent brewing his future projects, including ‘Light Switch’, are put forth to the spotlight with this newest song. No, it still doesn’t have any crazy chord switches of endlessly complicated harmonies like the multi-instrumentalist has proven he can conjure, and instead Charlie played with the idea of space and simplicity with ‘Light Switch’. The tight rhythms, paired with the lack of overarching drones in the background give ‘Light Switch’ a very tight feel without sounding so explicitly funky. It’s groovy, don’t get me wrong, but Charlie finds more subtle ways to make you bop your head. The chorus is very catchy, following the previous themes mentioned in the verses, with more instruments layered atop the groove to raise the dynamics. If anything, the production is absolutely out of this world, sounding clean and crisp over the wonderful composition by Charlie to begin with.

To answer the question posed in the introduction: ‘Light Switch’ is one of Charlie’s best tunes, both simple in its presentation but complex in its execution. It’s a poppy, groovy anthem that begs for a full LP from the artist. In the meantime, fans and casual listeners alike will love ‘Light’s Out’.
