MESSAGE FROM THE CLERGY – A new Papa has arisen amongst the ranks, and with it not only are the fans of Swedish rockers Ghost expecting a new album, but the band released a single to build hype, and give the world a preview of what’s ahead for the group, titled ‘Call Me Little Sunshine’.

Despite the band reinventing their image with every new release, each and every Ghost release sees the band follow a linear progression in terms of their songwriting and musicianship. Every album always builds on ideas from the last and both tries to improve and try new ideas, mixing it with the rest of the ingredients in the soup pot. ‘Call Me Little Sunshine’, is a bit less of a step ahead than their previous efforts, especially considering their last album was by far the biggest leap they had made in their career. The song could’ve been on their previous album, 2018’s Prequelle, but there are still clear signs that the band is constantly looking to evolve their sound. For one, this is by far the best that Ghost has sounded in terms of production. The drums are extremely clean, Papa’s voice is smooth as butter, and all the instruments feel purposeful and well placed within the soundscape, something that is very rare within hard rock and metal. From a songwriting standpoint, the song is infectiously catchy, filled with the ominous major-sounding chord progressions and melodies, paired with hints of creepy harmonies that sound Halloween-esque. The chorus is one of their strongest, sounding like a new-age Black Sabbath song dolled up in an almost cinematic way. The length is just right for the song to tell its story, thus making this song a perfect single, and subsequently a preview, for their upcoming LP.

Ghost has always delivered gold, and while maybe ‘Call Me Little Sunshine’ isn’t the biggest leap forward the band has done in their career, it’s a wonderful song through and through, filled with what makes Ghost so good in the first place.
