You may know Chloe as one half of duo Chloe x Halle, where she teams up with her sister to perform some powerful R&B classics, but she also has a strong portfolio of solo work that showcases her individual talent as a singer, songwriter and producer.

Surprise is a relatively short song, only 2mins 50 seconds, but it does pack a lot in, whilst still retaining quite a memorable hook. When the song started, I felt straight away that this track was very much a production of 2022. With Strings and synths, we are launched into a smooth intro with lyrics that are clear and are very distinctive from the start. There is a flow to the melody that is easy to listen to and moves effortlessly between the verses. There is a nice blend of tone and pitch that keeps the song interesting and separates each section well. Chloe can mix her styles and the rap section shows a talent for language that gets you focusing on the real meaning  of the song.

All in all Surprise is a well crafted, excellently produced song that is already getting lots of attention by fans old and new. I came away wanting to listen to it again, which is always a good sign, but I wanted to really know if this was a song about a happy relationship, or one that was possibly nearing the end. I’m still not sure!
