Review: Brooke Scullion - Heartbreaker

Born in Ireland, Brooke Scullion has begun to build a strong reputation as a talented performer. In 2020, as a contestant on the Voice, she managed the rare feet of turning all four of the judges chairs around, demonstrating her raw talent and power as a singer. Many people may have seen her perform in the 2022 Eurovision semi-finals, representing Ireland and eventually finishing 10th overall, but didn’t quite make it to the final!
When Heartbreaker starts, the first few bars really grab your attention, and you know the song will work for you. With a strong kick drum and the quick moving melody of the verses, you are drawn into the song and forced to listen to the lyrics. What I really like is the dynamic shift as the chorus comes in. This does happen in pretty much every song, but in Heartbreaker, it really stands out and makes it memorable.
There are some interesting vocal lines that double track Brooke Scullion’s voice and we can assume that she must have an impressive range, with a low undertone in the verses, but soaring harmonies that float across the chorus and latter parts of the arrangement. If you listen carefully, you can hear some of the Irish dialect in the vocals, which make this release such a wonderful refreshing song.
