If there’s two things that go together better than peanut butter and jelly, it’s Maro and acoustic guitars. With her newest single, ‘Just Wanna Forget You’, Maro uses the beautification of the acoustic guitar to its full extent for a gorgeous track.

The first thing that’s the most gripping initially upon listening to the song is the intimacy of the song, how close the guitars and the voice all sound. The loose rhythm is only highlighted by Maro’s voice and the strumming of the guitars, sprinkled with all kinds of other guitars embellishing the chord progression. The composition sounds spacious without feeling a shred of emptiness. Each of the guitars paints the picture, which is ultimately simple. The melody is beautiful, carrying us to a second verse where a more defined percussion rides the groove onward, still played by the thumping and strumming on an acoustic guitar. Just when you think that was the twist, the song switches key in a break to only elevate the musical experience more. It’s at that moment that I realized how well justified the slightly-longer runtime was for ‘Just Wanna Forget You’. Still, through all the various sections, the song never explodes or breaks out of the bounds of its initial instrumentation. It’s nothing but acoustic guitars and Maro, and that’s what makes it so special.

‘Just wanna forget you’ is a work of art. It’s a statement on Maro’s versatility – where last year she experimented (very successfully) into more electric, dance-y sounds, she took her first release of 2023 closer to the realms of her musical beginnings. The sound is more mature, more evolved, and still shows new shades of Maro. It’s a song that can so easily find itself played in repeat, with more new elements still unfolding with every listen.
