Nicky Youre has made a lot of new fans since his debut, ‘Sex and Lemonade’ was released in 2020. This latest release is only the fifth single that has been put out by Youre (birth name Ure), but he has covered a lot of ground in terms of his songwriting and production that means that Shut me up will no doubt receive much critical acclaim.

‘Shut me up’ is peppered with insecurity as a lyrically piece, with Nicky Youre essentially questioning whether the relationship he is describing is real enough to believe in. As we overthink many situations in our lives, so too does Nicky Youre. The line ‘kiss my lips and shut me up’ gives the listener a good steer where the song is aiming to take you.

With a dance/pop upbeat drum, this track has a real bounce to it. The melody line is punchy too, giving the overall feel of the song a real sense of energy. After the first short section, there is an offbeat synth which further adds to the tempo and drives the song. There are layers that build and fade and the use of background handclaps is a nice way to keep the momentum of the song up, even when other instruments are stripped back. All in all, this is a fun, easy to listen to song that has a lot more going on than you might at first notice.
