As a writer and classically trained musician, the art of sampling has always been a mystery to me. The idea of creating music by blending chops from previously composed songs is fascinating, and it's somewhat challenging for me to comprehend how this method can produce entirely new tracks with their own characteristics and unique identity. Perhaps now, with the hot public debate on AI, I understand a bit more about the possibilities of analyzing and remixing previous materials to create new ones.
In Kaytranada's case, a true master of the sampling technique, his signature sound is unmistakably unique, even considering the overwhelming number of artists he collaborates with on *Timeless*.
Legends of hip-hop, R&B, funk, jazz, and various genres related to Black music make appearances here. Kaytranada is not only a genius producer and sampling expert but also contributes his own vocal work to the mix. Given the number of big names featured, the high-quality production, and Kaytranada's multifaceted talent, it's impossible to go wrong with this album.
Reviewing each track individually would turn this piece into a book rather than a review or recommendation, as this gem of an album has so much to cover. The smart sampling, interesting use of synths, Kaytranada's vocals, the variety of genres and styles covered, and his collaborators' contributions create an overwhelming eclecticism that is simply too much to cover in detail.
But as a bottom line, I can confidently say this: I believe any dance music enthusiast, or honestly, any music lover, will find something to love in this record. It covers so much, and everything it covers, it covers very well.
