Schoolboy Q has long been a fascinating figure in the rap scene, deftly straddling the line between high-concept rap and infectious musical escapades. He's an artist who can effortlessly transition from raucous raves and parties to the realm of intimate music, where complexity and contemplation are well treasured.

"Blue Lips," his sixth studio album, is a curious entry in his discography, marked by its relative lack of mainstream acclaim. This, however, is not a reflection of its quality but rather its introspective nature. I believe it is his most personal work to date, both lyrically and musically. The album embraces a progressive approach, with tracks unfolding in distinct acts, characterized by contrasting musical structures that morph and evolve. At times, the soundscape is funky, dripping with R&B and jazzy undertones; at others, it dives headlong into unrestrained lunacy. An excellent example of this intricate philosophy of rap composition is "OhIO," which opens with a sultry intro, carried by a lushly sampled bass and punctuated by choruses that are continually interrupted by a rapid-fire flow. The track then pivots to an aggressive beat and flow, only to conclude with a richly orchestrated jazz section, where the rhythm and flow meander through ever-changing complex patterns.

Lyrically, the album commences with the familiar tropes of party rap—obsessive paeans to money, fame, and women and lots of aggressive swagger. But as it progresses, it reveals deeper narratives: near-death experiences, the struggles of the working class, and genuine worries about school shootings and the difficulties faced by the youth.

"Blue Lips" is a wild ride, yet never descends into chaos. Its frenetic details and audacious instrumentation never feel gaudy or “too much.” Additionally, that level of detail, I believe, ensures that it will captivate a different audience—maybe not a mass of rap aficionados, but curious minds and refined tastes.
