Review: 'Jealous' by The Aces: A Funky Blend of Groove and Authenticity

The Aces have released a catchy modern funk tune titled “Jealous.” Upon hearing it for the first time, I couldn’t help but draw comparisons to Ariana Grande’s “Yes, and?” The comparison isn’t so much about the genre or artistry but rather the melodic space the song inhabits. That said, hats off to The Aces—they’ve crafted a truly enjoyable track.
The funky, playful, and teasing vibe of the song aligns perfectly with its exploration of jealousy. Repeating the line, “I know you’re jealous when I walk in the room,” the track’s sound genuinely captures this sentiment. It’s always exciting when a song tells a story not just through its lyrics but through its instrumentation as well. While many tracks aim to convey meaning beyond their lyrics, few succeed as effectively as this one.
When it comes to the genre, I’m not entirely sure what to label this song—and honestly, that’s not what matters most. What stands out to me is the mix and the groove, both of which are exceptional. Two standout elements in the mix are the kick drum and the repeating guitar riffs. They’re simple in structure but elevated by the mix engineer’s skill. The result is a track that’s effortlessly pleasant to listen to.
Recently, I wrote about another release by The Aces, “The Magic,” where they confidently proclaim, “You know we got it. We got the magic.” Whatever that magic may be, traces of it are definitely present in “Jealous.” Not only does it match “The Magic” in top-notch quality, but it also feels equally authentic. The more I hear from The Aces, the more I sense their genuineness. They come across as a group of talented musicians who came together to create something cool. Sure, their music features modern, catchy sounds and arrangements, but it still feels refreshingly real.
