Review: Why Alessia Cara’s ‘Slow Motion’ Feels So Timeless

Alessia Cara has recently released a groovy and soulful track titled “Slow Motion.” I’ve listened to it a few times now, and I have to say—I’m not getting tired of it. I love how quickly it transitions to the chorus and how it stays within the same sonic space throughout. Sometimes, you don’t need a drastic production shift or a complex bridge. Sometimes, all you need is a steady groove, a few well-placed instruments, and a catchy vocal idea.
If Slow Motion sets the tone for upcoming pop music, I’ll be more than happy. I love how organic the track sounds. Whether or not this becomes a trend is impossible to predict, but I certainly wouldn’t mind if it did. The song’s music video features Alessia dancing in a red dress in front of a curtain. The moves are cool, and for such a simple concept, it complements the song’s vibe perfectly.
When I first heard Adele’s Rolling in the Deep, I felt something similar to what I experienced with Slow Motion—a refreshing reminder that the classic formula of music production still works.
Produced by Mike Elizondo (who’s worked with Twenty One Pilots and Nelly Furtado) and Jake Gosling (Ed Sheeran, James Bay), Slow Motion follows her recent track "(Isn’t It) Obvious," which even features a guitar solo from John Mayer and has already racked up millions of streams. Alessia gets songwriting credit on Slow Motion, so she clearly had a hand in crafting the lyrics. Who contributed the most? Hard to say, but maybe that’s not the point—the lyrics are smart, and the words are undeniably well chosen.
With a new album on the way, if this track is any indication, I’m excited for what’s next. Not that Alessia needs my praise—she’s already built an enormous fan base and continues to dominate streaming platforms. But if you haven’t already, go give Slow Motion a spin!
