A Stylish Strut into Pop Punk: Alex Porat’s 'Better Than That'

When I look at the cover art for Alex Porat’s new track “Better Than That,” it kind of looks like she’s on her way somewhere—while also striking a fabulous pose. I’m not sure how that image would translate into audio, and since I’ve never heard anything from Alex Porat before, I’m excited to find out.

The song opens with a simple drum groove and an acoustic guitar. Then Alex’s vocals come in and really fill out the space. Her voice is super clean, and her melody choices are spot-on for this kind of pop track. There’s something to be said for making a pop song feel this natural—and I think she totally nails it.

I feel like this track has a bit of punk spirit. It’s right on the edge of being rocky and grungy. Honestly, all it would’ve taken is a couple of guys with bad ideas and some distorted guitars. Some people might argue that would’ve taken the song to the next level, but personally, I like it just the way it is. It sort of feels like a “steal your boyfriend” song—though I wasn’t completely sure at first. The chorus echoes, “Baby I can love you better than that,” and after listening closely to the full lyrics, I can confirm: yep, the story is exactly what I thought it was. Alex is ready to love them better, and they can call her once the breakup happens.

The music video leans into that cocky, sassy vibe. Everyone’s dressed in all black—boots, short skirts, and small tops. The whole mood of the song is tight and deliberate, and it feels like something that definitely belongs in the pop universe. As much as I enjoy experimental pop that pushes boundaries with wild effects and fresh sounds, it’s actually refreshing to hear a song that’s just catchy and driven by drums, bass, guitars, and vocals. There are a few extra sounds layered in, sure, but at its core, it feels like classic pop punk.

Give this one a listen if you’re in the mood for a high-energy, fun pop track. It definitely makes time move faster—and I love that.
