Every teenager’s dream boyband One Direction have responded to a social media campaign aimed at getting 17-year-old Leah Washington, who had her leg amputated following the Alton Towers rollercoaster crash, to meet the band.

Leah had her legs crushed after the incident on the theme park’s Smiler ride and since had to have one of them removed. She is now starting on the long road to recovery after sustaining the life changing injuries and friend Sara Stuart thought she would start the campaign through Twitter in order to "make Leah's day and aid her recovery".

The band have been the centre of a lot of controversy recently but to their credit, they have done all they can in response to the plea. Louis Tomlinson tweeted a get well message to the teen after finding out about the campaign and said: Thinking about you Leah & hoping you are home in South Yorkshire soon Xx"

It became clear through the campaign that Leah was due to attend one of the band’s recent gigs in Cardiff but was unable to go following the accident. The band will be making up for it even though their busy schedule means that they won’t be able to visit Leah in hospital.

The band’s publicist said: "Unfortunately because of their schedule they can't visit her in hospital, but they have offered Leah tickets to a forthcoming concert of her choice when she has recovered, and will be delighted to meet her backstage then."

Bands as big as One Direction who have such an army of young and impressionable fans almost have a degree of duty of care to their fans and it seems as though they have done all they can in this instance in order to support one such fan.

Whether it’s to do with publicity or not, they cannot be faulted in their response to the situation. Louis Tomlinson’s personal response in particular was heart warming in the face of such a sad and difficult situation and hopefully it will help Leah on her way to a speedy recovery.

Other artists could take a leaf out of One Direction’s book in this case as they have most certainly gone above and beyond to cater to a girl who has had be dealt a cruel hand.
