Metallica’s James Hetfield Shows Off New Guitar “Carl” Made From Old Garage Wood

by Adam Bailey

An interesting video has emerged today, direct from Metallica’s official Youtube channel Metallica TV.  Frontman James Hetfield explaining the story behind his latest guitar named “Carl”.

Hetfield went on to say that him and the band recently went to visit 3132 Carlson Boulevard in El Cerrito, California- This is where the band first wrote Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, back in the 80's, in a garage outside the house. Unfortunately, the garage has since been demolished but the current owners still had some of the wood remains left over.

They gave luthier Ken Lawrence  (who has built guitars for Metallica previously) eight pieces of wood, and he started to build what would become "Carl". The name short for ‘Carlson Boulevard’. Hetfield said that he didn’t want the guitar too clean, so the outcome was a rough and ready appearance, which had been wire brushed. He added “There were no splinters on it”

A message got posted along with this latest video:

“In honor of the re-release of “The $5.98 EP - Garage Days Re-Revisited” we thought you'd enjoy story about another garage - the Carlson Garage where “Ride the Lightning” & “Master of Puppets” were written”.

The guitar also features other original band members, Lars Ulrich and Kirk Hammett and the ‘garage’ inscribed down the fret board. As stories behind guitars go, it couldn’t be much cooler than this.

At the end, Hetfield adds that the guitar also sounds "really great", and uses it in one of their latest songs "Moth Into Flame"
