Interview: Drew Sycamore talks new music, influences & stage fright

by Andrew Braithwaite

Drew Sycamore is a name that’s already established in her homeland of Denmark. With three consecutive #1 singles under the belt (including a 16 week run at the top for ‘I Wanna Be Dancing’ and another 7 for ‘45 Fahrenheit Girl’) on the official Danish Radio Chart.

Now she’s ready to take her music global, with interest emerging in the UK, USA and beyond. With 25 million streams already behind her, it’s probably only a matter of time before we’re hearing a lot more about this artist. I recently caught up with Drew to ask some further questions.

Your new single Jungle has been out for over a week now. How's the song doing so far? Also, what's the inspiration behind it?

I believe in the concept of letting go of the music once I'm done creating it. What happens afterwards is out of my hands. I feel like it’s been going alright though. People seem to like it. I will know more once I get on the road again, haha! Stay tuned! It’s a song for my ultimate muse. It’s written under a violet sky in June. It's really a vibe and I feel a bit like putting rocket fuel in the tank. I think there’s a lot of longing to that song. I feel it. It almost aches to sing it. Longing for someone who is close but yet so far away. And being proper in love but not knowing what to do with all that energy. Powerful stuff. The mind plays games with you and you’re just a passenger.

You have already had success in Denmark and are looking to tap more into the UK market and beyond. Are you managing to pick up more interest and new listeners in the UK?

I feel the traction coming from the UK for sure and also on the other side of the pond from America. It feels really good. My dream is really to have as many excuses as possible to come back to the UK. I miss being there. I felt at home for the first time when I moved there back in 2010. For me, it was the people and the diversity. I miss that loads. The dream is boiling in the pot ready to be served so I will hopefully see you very soon for my first London gig.

The 80s synth-pop sound in Jungle is something I can imagine will resonate well around the world. Is this the kind of style you normally go for? As I believe you have a background in electronica music too?

The ‘Sycamore’ album defo has a lot of lovely synth scapes and ‘Jungle’ does tap into some of the more electronic vibes. I didn’t as such draw the conscious line between my background in club music and what I was doing when I wrote it. The sound of this album has been a journey in itself and has been incredibly fun to explore. I feel like we have been playing real music and real instruments and playing around with some really badass references for inspiration. I really jumped into it all completely fearless (I say that now but I defo had a few meltdown during the process).

25 million streams doesn't come easy. Was there a specific event or song, or playlist that got you more on the radar?

‘I Wanna Be Dancing’ got a lot of attention for sure. It came out in October as the second single of the album. I think the feel good vibe of that track just really hit home in a time of relentless lockdown. People needed a pick-me-up. And I had just carved out my little spot on the scene with ‘Take It Back’ which is the first single of the album. I know people have been shimmying about to that one. Can't wait for real parties and real shows! And then ’45 fahrenheit’ hit the charts at the beginning of 2021. That really set fire to the fuel for me. I did this vampire short film music video that got a lot of traction. That was fun! That song has been a complete plague across my native country. (Muhaha *strokes cat*)

Who are your main influences?

I have many. Amy Winehouse, Linda Perry, David Bowie, Chris Martin, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Christine and the Queens, Freddie Mercury…. The list is long. I'm very inspired by a lot of visual arts and long conversations with my friends about life stuff. That’s usually what ends up in the music.

What has been your best gig or performance to date?

I can’t possibly say. It would probably be one of the more low key gigs I’ve done. I used to suffer a lot from stage fright. Really bad. Sweaty hands and nausea. It's only recently in the past year or two I’ve learnt to let that go. And there has been a global pandemic… not a lot of shows on. I feel like every show I play these days, with the world opening up and such, is the new best show I’ve ever done. But that's just a good thing!

Have you got a dream artist collaboration?

Harry Styles (We would make sweet magic music I’m sure!)

Are you planning any events in the UK?

I am planning, in my head, and usually things manifest themselves in real life when I want them to. So stay tuned, i'll be right over! I will announce on my socials as soon as we’ve got plans!

Have you got a message for your followers and fans

Thank you so much for listening and following. It means the world. I’m only here to make you see how wonderful you are and I can’t wait to make you feel amazing at a show! We are gonna hug and kiss and dance and feel GREAT! Send me a message, I do try to reply to as many as I can <3 Drew Crew forever!

Thanks Drew - all the best for the future!
