Interview: Freddie Long talks new music, influences & his own record label

by Andrew Braithwaite

Freddie Long is a rising singer-songwriter from Sussex who's been quietly gaining the attention of some big names, and got the likes of MTV UK mentioning him in the same breath as Tom Grennan and Lewis Capaldi.

His previous song releases have generated over 2 million streams combined, and his latest 'In Your Arms' already has over 150K streams within a few weeks. I recently caught up with Freddie to ask some further questions about him as an artist.

Your new single 'In Your Arms' has recently been released. What's the song about, and how is it doing so far?

Yes, I knew going into the writing session I wanted to write a song that felt a sense of togetherness. The chorus acknowledges that person that helped you through hard times and is always that shoulder to lean on. With the verse I wanted to keep true to myself and keep them a bit more moody and have some darker characteristics in them.

It seems to be going well, which is amazing to see. It’s only been out a few weeks now and I think it’s been streamed over 150k times and has multiple radio plays, which is mental to think about.

You've already racked up a few million streams, which is quite some feat with the amount of competition online. I also believe it's released under your own label! What has been the secret to receive these plays and recognition?

So crazy to hear when it’s put like that. Yeah, I started releasing through my label, Banana Split Records last year. The reason for this was so I could control the creative side and have the freedom when I needed it. It’s been an amazing experience and I’ve been fortunate to have people around me to help me understand and learn about the business side of things. I would definitely recommend it to anyone thinking about it. I think it’s important to try and keep the rights to your music.

I notice you've already got a bunch of positive reviews, and MTV has compared you to the likes of Tom Grennan and Lewis Capaldi. Have you had any artists reach out and show some support yet?

It’s amazing to see such high profile platforms giving support. I think the craziest one I’ve had so far was Professor Green. I was a big fan back in the day and receiving a DM from him was a mad moment.

Who are your main influences?

To list a few - James Brown, Prince, Amy Winehouse, Arctic Monkeys, Linkin Park, Queen and more. I wouldn't say there's anyone in particular.

Have you got a standout gig or performance that you have played?

I opened the main stage at the Sundown Festival in 2019. That was by far the biggest gig I’ve played. My first taste of a festival and I can say I’m definitely hooked. I can’t wait for the world to open up again and hopefully get out and play more shows.

If you could choose one artist to collaborate with, who would this be?

I think at the moment it would have to be Billie Eilish, I love her style and the characteristics she gives off in her music.

What are your thoughts on lockdown and how it's affected music and performing arts?

It’s been tough. That's for sure. At the same time it’s allowed me to think more about the direction I’m wanting to take with my music, which has really opened my eyes up. Something I’m actually pretty thankful for. It’s a shame how it’s affecting the performing arts world. It would’ve been great to see more support around the community with funding etc but I know we’re going to bounce back bigger and better than before.

Have you got any live shows planned?

Unfortunately I can’t say too much at the moment, but we’re in talks about a few very exciting opportunities.

Do you have a message for your followers and fans?

Thanks for supporting my journey. Can’t wait to get out and play shows and meet you guys in real life. Love you.

Thanks Freddie - all the best for the future!
