This trio of weekly featured tracks string together an element of psychedelia that wraps up WiFi PR Group’s Indie Anthems Vol. 9 on a mind-bending note.
Indie Anthems Vol. 9 digital mixtape
If music is like a drug, psychedelic rock and experimental sounds are the vehicle to a higher being and more complex sense of self. WiFi PR Group appreciates the mind-opening nature of psychedelic music and has chosen to end the latest installation of its indie artist digital mixtape series, Indie Anthems Vol. 9, released at CMJ Music Marathon, with three psychedelic-related tracks.
Held October 21-25 in 80+ venues throughout New York City, CMJ Music Marathon showcased more than 1,300 artists for over 125,000 attendees, who were exposed to some of the top talent in underground music. The festival is a prime source of music discovery and serves as the foundation of success for many new artists. CMJ was the perfect outlet to release Indie Anthems Vol. 9, and WiFi PR Group handed out 3,500 download cards to festival attendees to spread the word about the album’s featured indie artists.
Swiss psychedelic post metal group Parole Perse is the first psychedelic featured track of the week with their song “Labyrinth.” They followed up their 2011 self-titled demo with their debut EP, My Presence, My Shades, in March 2014, and thus far they have been most often compared to the likes of Opeth, Anathema and even Pink Floyd. They consider themselves “irrationally” attracted to music as a safe way to communicate thoughts and emotions, learn discipline and set you free from constraints to help you get to know yourself better—all of which you’ll find on this week’s featured track.
On his track “I Can Make Long Lists,” solo project Nyentek showcases the strongest psychedelic element of the three with an ear-catching experimental vibe that is driven forward by pounding keyboard melodies and synthesized beats. The lyrics are disparate, delivered in monotone spurts and organized into lists of everything from organs to famous jazz artists. They complement the funky, futuristic sound that Nyentek is playing around with, which is one that many people have not been able to compare with any other known artist. Out of Granite Springs, N.Y., he has released a slew of albums over the years, nearly one a month for a great deal of that time, and a good example of that discography can be heard on his featured Indie Anthems track.
While not directly inspired by Frank Zappa, fusion artist The Mica Project is often compared to Zappa’s earlier works, a touch of which can be heard on The Mica Project’s featured track, “Rats With Wings.” This Astoria, N.Y.-based solo multi-instrumentalist handles guitar, bass, piano and vocals on his self-titled debut album, and he fronts a signature blend of psychedelic, progressive and classic rock with hints of blues and folk. His featured track has no vocals and instead relies on the melodic progression and psychedelic elements to push the song along and wrap up the Indie Anthems track list.
Another 1,500 digital downloads of Indie Anthems Vol. 9 can now be downloaded from the Indie Anthems Bandcamp page. The previous eight Indie Anthems installments are also available for streaming and downloads, while supplies last.

Indie Anthems Vol. 9 digital mixtape
One of the best parts about a digital mixtape is the opportunity to hear a number of different artists and genres all in one compilation. On WiFi PR Group’s latest installment of its own mixtape series, Indie Anthems Vol. 9, listeners can enjoy more than a dozen up-and-coming independent artists, all of whom have something fresh to bring to the table. This week, WiFi PR features three different takes on the rock genre (Kevin Carling, RPS Surfers, Royal Red Brigade) as well as a hip new take on the traditional dub sound (Silva).

For those who enjoy the light classic rock vibe of Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel or more modern artists like MGMT, Kevin Carling has a new playlist addition in store with his featured track, “Ghost.” A solo artist and multi-instrumentalist from Brookfield, Ill., Carling plays guitar, piano, ukulele, harmonica and percussion, sings the vocals and makes drum and electronic beats on his computer. These lend to his multi-dimensional sound, impressively created by just one musician. His Indie Anthems track is off his latest album, Into This Miraculous World (2014), which was a follow-up to his debut, God of the Sky (2013).
Taking a turn toward surf rock with a funky organ aesthetic, Israeli quartet RPS Surfers take the organ, a nontraditional element of rock music, and place it center stage with the main melody of their featured track, “Gaza.” Their core sound still earns them comparisons to other classic surf bands as well as Mediterranean bands like Boom Pam. They use facets of their homeland to inspire their music, such as political issues like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and environmental concepts like commercial and residential building near the Shores of Israel.
For this week’s last taste of rock, WiFi PR moves toward dirtier punk rock with “20/20” from Regina, Saskatchewan’s Royal Red Brigade. These Canadian punk rockers bring the heat and the noise on this track with a powerful, distorted guitar line and hard vocals over punk’s classic kinetic percussion. This featured song is off the band’s latest release, Seasides (2014), which follows up two of their other promising recordings, Give Into the Violence (2012) and Out of the Trenches (2010).
Off their latest EP, Lucid Silvan Dub (2014), Silva’s featured track “Move Out” demonstrates their experimental, futuristic take on the dub sound. Besides a wistful vocal intro, the track is fronted by lyrics in the classic dub delivery style and backed by the traditional basic beat. But layered on top of that are funky keyboard lines and psychedelic synthesized surprises that elevate their sound to a new level. Both this music and their lyrics profess their devotion to New Age interests and the fundamentals of freedom, love and peace. For some context, Silva have a sound that rings of Salmonella Dub, Pink Floyd and Nahko Bear.
