Ilka de Gast’s Talking to Whales: A Mystical Journey Through Sound and Sea

by Adam Bailey

The inspiration for Ilka de Gast’s new single, “Talking to Whales” comes from the powerful Pacific Ocean and her connection to it. Ilka has spent many hours on the cliffs of the Bodega Bay Headlands in Northern California, enjoying the stunning vistas, the company of whales and seals, and majestic, mystical pelicans flying overhead. It was while sitting at her favorite spot, the rocky outcropping known as the “Vortex,” that Ilka interconnected with the commanding, yet gentle energy of the whales, and the melody and idea of “Talking to Whales” flowed through to her.

After a four-year studio silence, the 30-time chart-topper returns with For Recreational Use Only, a loose, lean, and occasionally lonesome 12-track album that struts through backroads, bars, and breakups with the kind of laid-back confidence you can’t fake. It’s Shelton at his most relaxed, most reflective—and, paradoxically, his most purposeful.

Aminé has just dropped a new track called “Vacay”, and based on the title alone, I already like the direction it’s headed. The beat is full of energy—it reminds me of something Channel Tres might produce, but with a cleaner, less murky sound. I’ve always loved when rap and hip hop lean into that four-on-the-floor rhythm; it gives the track momentum and makes it instantly danceable.

BADBADNOTGOOD, or BBNG, has just released a new track called “Found A Light”—and it’s packed with beautiful, subtle moments. One of the best parts? The spotlight they’ve given to featured vocalist V.C.R. It’s refreshing to see a band of BBNG’s stature fully credit and elevate the singers they collaborate with. V.C.R might still be considered indie, but she’s already made some waves on her own. Here, though, she truly shines—her voice is top-tier, and it’s easy to understand why BBNG chose to work with her.

If there's a face of modern country’s genre-bending, chart-torching moment, Bailey Zimmerman just might be it. And if there’s a voice that defines country’s thunderous, beer-soaked backbone, it’s Luke Combs. Now, in a power-collab that feels like destiny—or at least Nashville’s answer to a summer Marvel team-up—the two have dropped “Backup Plan,” a raw, raucous anthem that throws heartbreak, hope, and grit into the blender and smashes “play.”

Ed Sheeran recently released a new song titled “Old Phone,” the second single from his upcoming album Play, following “Azizam.” I’ve been listening to Ed since he put out “Lego House” and all those other early hits. I’m not going to pretend I discovered him before he got big—I didn’t. But “Old Phone” is yet another great piece from one of the all-time greatest songwriters.

Just recently, Green Day dropped a new track called “Ballyhoo.” I’m writing this review as someone who used to scream the lyrics to “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and play “Basket Case” covers on my electric guitar. So yes—I’m definitely open to hearing anything Green Day has to offer. They've already earned my lifelong attention.

From Silence to Song: Andrew Spice’s Triumphant Return with Gentle Sentinel

by Andrew Braithwaite

After two decades away from songwriting, Canadian artist Andrew Spice returns with “Gentle Sentinel,” a hauntingly beautiful ballad dedicated to his late cat, Bea. More than just a tribute, the song marks the emotional rekindling of a creative fire that had long been dormant. What began as a simple one-minute songwriting prompt from his friend and fellow musician Emm Gryner blossomed into a stirring, piano-led piece featuring Grammy-nominated string arranger Drew Jurecka. With Bea as both muse and emotional anchor, “Gentle Sentinel” captures the profound, often unspoken love between humans and their animal companions—a love that quietly carries us through grief, healing, and life’s most intimate moments.
